Issue ONE - Architecture of central Bradford (May, 2025)

£4.60

The first issue celebrates the architectural heritage of Bradford city centre which boasts a high proportion of listed buildings.

Bradford is a product of the industrial revolution and reputedly prior to the outbreak of the First World War was one of the wealthiest places in England. The architecture bears witness to the historic commercial success of Bradford and the pride of industrialists and civic leaders who built the city. Its iconic Victorian buildings have outlived and outshone those modernist creations of the 1960s and 1970s that were intended to herald a brave new world.

Sadly the physical fabric of the central district also testifies to the change in the city’s economic fortunes. However Bradford can reasonably claim a pioneering approach to the redesign of the city centre having embarked on a radical greening transformation in the last couple of years. This has been achieved by replacing roads (including a busy dual carriageway) through a combination of pedestrian precincts as well as an urban meadow to complement the Victorian architecture. At the heart of it is Bradford’s splendid City Hall that dates from 1873.

A5 size, 40 pages.

The cover price is £3.00; cost £4.60 for UK p&p.
