Little Germany is a predominantly warehouse district in the centre of Bradford that became known locally as ‘Germania’ in the nineteenth century on account of the concentration of businesses owned by immigrant German merchants. Whilst the prime purpose of the warehouses was to store woollen products, they also served as offices and not least as a hubristic statement of wealth for their owners.
With a profusion of listed buildings dating back to 1855, Little Germany is regularly featured in TV and film productions, on one occasion having been portrayed in a cold war thriller set in Berlin. More recently it featured in the Netflix production, Six Triple Eight as well as Peaky Blinders.
By the middle of the 1980s with the demise of the local textile industry many of the buildings were left vacant and the area has since been largely repurposed for residential and leisure use. Little Germany boasts a variety of architectural styles built in the local stone that gives a characteristic golden glow in the sun.
