Issue FOUR - Saltaire (18th July, 2025)

£4.60

Saltaire is a World Heritage site within the Bradford district near Shipley and is named after its founder, Sir Titus Salt who opted to develop his textile mill on the banks of the River Aire on the outskirts of Bradford. It is an industrial village with housing having been built specifically for workers at the mill which opened in 1853 (at the time becoming the largest industrial building in the world by total floor area). With its Italianate architecture Saltaire is no ordinary mill.

The mill itself closed for textile production in 1986 but was rescued the following year by the late Jonathan Silver who had the vision to repurpose the site for leisure and retail activity including the staging of cultural events and a dedicated gallery that features the artwork of Bradfordian, David Hockney. Parts of the mill are also occupied by a multitude of different businesses and New Mill across the Leeds-Liverpool canal has been converted for office use as well as flats.

The village is popular as a residential centre benefiting from fast direct rail connections to Bradford, Leeds and Skipton. There is plenty to entertain a visitor with shops and cafes as well as the picturesque Roberts Park next to the river.

A5 size, 44 pages.
